How to block Facebook on iPhone

The feed, groups and that red notification dot are built to keep you checking in. Here’s how to block Facebook on your iPhone, the free built-in way, and a version that actually holds.

Facebook has quietly become one of the stickiest apps on the phone — not through Reels-style dopamine, but through obligation: Marketplace messages, group posts, event invites, birthday reminders and an endless feed threaded between them. You open it for one thing and the feed decides the rest. For many people it’s less “fun I can’t resist” and more “a tab of chores that never closes.” Blocking it turns Facebook back into a place you visit on purpose, instead of a loop that runs whenever your attention dips.

Block Facebook the free way, with Screen Time

iOS has a built-in tool called Screen Time. It can put a daily limit on Facebook in a couple of minutes:

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time. If it’s off, tap Turn On Screen Time.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Search for Facebook, tick it, and tap Next.
  4. Set the limit as low as it goes, 1 minute, then tap Add.
  5. From now on, Facebook greys out once you pass that minute for the day.

For a stricter version, use Downtime (Settings › Screen Time › Downtime) to switch off Facebook during set hours, like work or bedtime.

The catch: it’s one tap to ignore

When the limit hits, iOS still shows an “Ignore Limit” button. One tap, “Ignore for Today”, and Facebook opens anyway. If the habit is strong, that escape hatch is usually all it takes to undo the block.

The stronger way: Cascade

Cascade is a focus app built on the same Apple Screen Time system, but designed to remove the easy way out and help the urge pass:

FAQ

Will blocking Facebook delete my account or messages?
No. Blocking only pauses the app, nothing is deleted. Your account, groups, photos and Messenger chats are all exactly where you left them.
Can I block Facebook but keep Messenger open?
Yes. With Cascade you choose exactly which apps to seal, so you can block Facebook and leave Messenger, or anything else, working normally.
Does the block keep working when the app is closed?
Yes. It runs in the background through Apple’s Screen Time, so it holds whether the app is open, closed, or after a restart.
Can I keep Messenger working while Facebook is blocked?
Yes — Messenger is a separate app on iOS, so you can block Facebook and leave Messenger untouched. You keep your conversations while the feed stays sealed.
I sell on Marketplace. How do I manage that with a block?
Batch it: keep Facebook blocked by default and open it in one or two planned windows a day for Marketplace replies (Monk mode’s Use Access is perfect for this). Buyers don’t expect instant answers — and you stop paying the feed-tax on every check.
Will blocking Facebook mute my groups or make me miss events?
Nothing is left or muted — groups, invites and notifications all resume the moment a session ends. For truly important events, the invite will still be there; the feed in between is what you’re skipping.
Is it better to deactivate Facebook or just block it?
Deactivation is heavyweight and usually temporary — most people reactivate within weeks because something practical (an event, Marketplace, a group) pulls them back, and the habit returns with it. Blocking keeps the useful parts reachable on your schedule while starving the reflex.
