How to block Netflix on iPhone

Autoplay counts down to the next episode before you can decide. Here’s how to block Netflix on your iPhone, the free built-in way, and a version that helps you actually stop.

Netflix doesn’t need notifications to keep you — autoplay does the work. The next episode starts in five seconds unless you actively stop it, cliffhangers are engineered into the cut, and “one episode” quietly becomes a 1 a.m. finale. The cost isn’t just the evening; it’s the next morning’s focus and the slow drift of bedtime. Blocking Netflix on your phone (and setting hours for it) turns bingeing back into a choice you make on the couch — not a default that happens to you in bed.

Block Netflix the free way, with Screen Time

iOS has a built-in tool called Screen Time. It can put a daily limit on Netflix in a couple of minutes:

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time. If it’s off, tap Turn On Screen Time.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Search for Netflix, tick it, and tap Next.
  4. Set the limit as low as it goes, 1 minute, then tap Add.
  5. From now on, Netflix greys out once you pass that minute for the day.

For a stricter version, use Downtime (Settings › Screen Time › Downtime) to switch off Netflix during set hours, like work or bedtime.

The catch: it’s one tap to ignore

When the limit hits, iOS still shows an “Ignore Limit” button. One tap, “Ignore for Today”, and Netflix opens anyway. If the habit is strong, that escape hatch is usually all it takes to undo the block.

The stronger way: Cascade

Cascade is a focus app built on the same Apple Screen Time system, but designed to remove the easy way out and help the urge pass:

FAQ

Does blocking Netflix delete my watchlist or profile?
No. Blocking only pauses the app, your profiles, watchlist and progress are all exactly where you left them.
Can I block Netflix at night only?
Yes. With routines you can schedule the block for bedtime automatically, so it’s there when willpower is lowest.
Can I still watch Netflix in Safari after blocking the app?
You can, unless you also block the browser. Cascade lets you block Safari during a session so there’s no side door.
Can I block Netflix only at bedtime?
Yes — that’s the highest-value block there is. A routine from, say, 23:00 to 07:00 seals the app during exactly the hours autoplay does its damage. Evenings stay free; 1 a.m. episodes don’t happen.
Does blocking Netflix on my iPhone affect my TV or laptop?
No — Screen Time blocking is per-device, so the living-room TV is untouched. For most people that’s the right shape anyway: the phone-in-bed loop is the problem, not movie night.
Will a block interrupt a download or my watch progress?
Nothing is lost. Downloads finish in the background and your progress is saved by Netflix — the app simply won’t open while the session runs.
How do I stop autoplay from pulling me into the next episode?
Turn off autoplay in your Netflix account settings (Profile › Playback settings) and let Cascade handle the hours: with a bedtime block in place, even a cliffhanger has nowhere to go.
