How to block WhatsApp on iPhone
Constant pings pull you out of deep work again and again. Here’s how to block or schedule WhatsApp on your iPhone, the free built-in way, and a firmer option for focus time.
WhatsApp is the hardest block to reason about because it’s genuinely essential — family, work, school groups all live there. But somewhere between the necessary messages, it became a feed too: Status updates, Channels, forwarded videos and group chats that ping all day. The goal isn’t to disappear from the people who need you; it’s to stop the ambient checking — opening WhatsApp forty times a day “just in case” — while keeping a sane, predictable rhythm of actually replying.
Block WhatsApp the free way, with Screen Time
iOS has a built-in tool called Screen Time. It can put a daily limit on WhatsApp in a couple of minutes:
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time. If it’s off, tap Turn On Screen Time.
- Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Search for WhatsApp, tick it, and tap Next.
- Set the limit as low as it goes, 1 minute, then tap Add.
- From now on, WhatsApp greys out once you pass that minute for the day.
For a stricter version, use Downtime (Settings › Screen Time › Downtime) to switch off WhatsApp during set hours, like work or bedtime.
The catch: it’s one tap to ignore
The stronger way: Cascade
Cascade is a focus app built on the same Apple Screen Time system, but designed to remove the easy way out and help the urge pass:
- Zen gives a gentle nudge, Hardcore blocks with a limited number of unlock passes, and Vault seals WhatsApp completely, no “ignore” button until the timer is up.
- When the urge to open WhatsApp hits, a short guided meditation helps you ride it out instead of white-knuckling it.
- Streaks, routines and a weekly recap keep you going, and it’s private, everything runs on-device.
