How to block Reddit on iPhone

One subreddit leads to another and suddenly it’s 1am. Here’s how to block Reddit on your iPhone, the free Screen Time method, and a lock you can’t tap past.

Reddit is the smart person’s time sink. It doesn’t feel like doomscrolling — it feels like learning, research, community. But the feed is infinite, every thread links to three more, and “one more comment section” quietly swallows the evening. Because it’s genuinely useful, all-or-nothing quitting rarely sticks; what works is drawing a line between intentional use (looking something up) and ambient use (opening it because your thumb did), and blocking the second one hard.

Block Reddit the free way, with Screen Time

iOS has a built-in tool called Screen Time. It can put a daily limit on Reddit in a couple of minutes:

  1. Open Settings and tap Screen Time. If it’s off, tap Turn On Screen Time.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Search for Reddit, tick it, and tap Next.
  4. Set the limit as low as it goes, 1 minute, then tap Add.
  5. From now on, Reddit greys out once you pass that minute for the day.

For a stricter version, use Downtime (Settings › Screen Time › Downtime) to switch off Reddit during set hours, like work or bedtime.

The catch: it’s one tap to ignore

When the limit hits, iOS still shows an “Ignore Limit” button. One tap, “Ignore for Today”, and Reddit opens anyway. If the habit is strong, that escape hatch is usually all it takes to undo the block.

The stronger way: Cascade

Cascade is a focus app built on the same Apple Screen Time system, but designed to remove the easy way out and help the urge pass:

FAQ

Can I block Reddit but keep messaging apps?
Yes. Pick exactly which apps to block and leave the rest untouched.
Does blocking delete my account or saved posts?
No. The app is only paused, your account, saved posts and subscriptions stay put.
Does it block Reddit in Safari too?
The app block covers the app. To stop browser access, block Safari during a focus session with Cascade.
Can I block specific subreddits instead of all of Reddit?
Not at the system level — iOS blocks whole apps, and Reddit’s own tools only mute communities from your feed. If certain subreddits are the trap, mute them inside Reddit for the times it’s open, and use Cascade to block the app itself during your focus hours.
I actually use Reddit for research. What’s a sane setup?
Let search engines be the front door: keep the app blocked and open specific threads from search results in your browser when you genuinely need an answer. The app’s home feed — the part that eats time — never gets a chance to load.
How do I stop the late-night Reddit spiral?
A nightly routine (e.g. 22:30–07:00) closes the app during exactly the hours the spiral happens, automatically, every day. No decision to make at midnight — it was made once, in daylight.
Does blocking Reddit log me out or delete my saved posts?
No. Your account, subscriptions and saved posts are untouched — the app just won’t open while a session is running. Everything is there when it ends.
